Naturally, we all have differently shaped lips. In this blog, we will look at what ‘ M-shaped lips’ are and how dermal fillers may help to balance out the dimensions of your lips and alter the overall shape.

What are M Shaped lips?

First off, no matter what shaped lips you have – remember they are beautiful as they are. Now, as we age, naturally our lips can start to lose volume. For those with M-shaped lips, the overall shape of the top lip could begin to appear more prominent as the top lip becomes thinner.

The M-shaped lip simply means a very prominent cupid’s bow, that almost resembles the letter M. With adequate volume in the top lip, this lip shape is desirable. However, sometimes when the top lip is thinner and lacking volume, it can add years to the face.

How to correct an M-shaped lip?

Dermal fillers are a great way to correct M-shaped lips, however, you must see a trained professional.

First, your clinician will analyse the overall shape of your face, this will determine exactly how much filler you need, and where for the best results. If you have M-shaped lips, we may choose to use a slightly different technique when injecting. Filling the lips evenly would increase volume, but it may not address the overall shape of the lips.

Ideally, when injecting fillers into the lips, we want to create an overall smooth, yet defined shape. With M-shaped lips, this means we may have to place different amounts of filler in each area of the upper lip to smooth out the shape which may take a couple of treatments, depending on how severe the shape is.

What Lip Filler is used?

Within most dermal fillers, the main ingredient is hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body and is responsible for maintaining the elasticity and volume of the skin.

A dermal filler such as Juvéderm Vobella works wonderfully when used to treat the shape of the lips. Vobella has a thinner consistency than some other dermal fillers and therefore is easy to control.

How long do lip fillers last?

Generally speaking, lip fillers last between 6-12 months, depending on the type of filler you have. However, some factors may impact the longevity of your treatment, including your lifestyle.

If you have dermal fillers, it is advised that you drink plenty of water to keep the skin hydrated. It may also depend on your age and how fast your body’s metabolism is. The younger you are, the faster you tend to burn calories meaning the filler may not last as long as somebody a little older.
