It’s natural to shed hair, but when it becomes excessive the hair can start to look significantly thinner. For some people, this can be detrimental to overall self-confidence which is why you might want to consider treatment. Now, when it comes to treatment, PRP for thinning hair is highly effective, and that’s what we will cover in this blog.

What causes hair thinning?

Before looking at specific treatment it helps to understand the hair, and what could trigger hair thinning. Hair thinning occurs when the follicles beneath the surface of the scalp remain dormant and do not produce any new hair.

Now, several contributing factors could be causing your hair to thin. The most common reason is genetics or androgenic alopecia which occurs because of natural hormone changes in the body.

However, there are a number of other reasons that could contribute to thinning hair. If you are concerned, we recommend that you seek the help of a professional who will be able to address any underlying issues.

Here are some other factors to consider:

• Medical conditions

• Ageing

• Hormonal changes, including pregnancy

• Medications

• External factors, including heat styling and chemicals and hairstyle

During your initial consultation, we will help you to identify any potential triggers and perhaps suggest a few simple lifestyle changes to help support you on your journey.

For some excessive hair thinning can result in visible bald patches on the scalp, so when we consider treatments, we focus on solutions that will help to stimulate dormant hair follicles and encourage new growth.

PRP for Hair Thinning

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy is one of the most popular forms of treatment to address thinning hair. Both highly effective and safe, PRP works by harnessing the natural nutrients found within your blood to encourage dormant hair follicles to produce new hair and stimulate overall collagen production in the skin.

Naturally, your blood contains several key nutrients that each help to support overall body health and functionality. These nutrients include platelets, plasma, and specific proteins known as growth factors.

During PRP hair loss treatment, we will first draw blood from your arm and place that blood into a special device that spins and separates the key components from the blood. These components are then injected beneath your scalp.

Typically, you will require around 40-50 shots per session, and we recommended that you undergo at least three treatments, spaced eight weeks apart for best results. You may also require some maintenance sessions, but we will discuss this with you during your consultation.

It is important to remember that hair growth can take a little time, so it is completely natural to not see results instantly with PRP for thinning hair. Most people begin to see new hair growth after around six weeks.

PRP treatment takes around 40 minutes to complete and is a non-invasive treatment meaning you can return to your day as normal afterward. As it uses nothing but your own blood, PRP carries very little risk of infection and is known to be one of the safest aesthetic treatments on the market, suitable for everybody.

However, there are some medical conditions for which PRP isn’t recommended, including some cancers, cardiovascular diseases, and pregnancy. If you have a medical condition, we advise you to consult your GP before looking at treatment.
